I recently discovered Diem Chau’s embroidered ceramics, and instantly awed by her delicate and beautiful artwork. The first thing that came to my mind was, how did she do it? The thread and needlework are clearly embedded in the gorgeous ceramic plates, bowls, and cups.
I’m guessing that she has to meticulously thread through the wet clay without messing up its form, before it is fired and dried. What brilliant artwork!
I’m especially fond of those pieces with portraits of Asian women and their braided long hair. These mixed media treasures are not only embedded with intricate needlework, but also precious culture and heritage.
